If you’re looking for a way to hang onto that summer feeling or you’re one of the lucky people who decided to take their holiday after peak season was over and are currently prepping for a sunshine holiday, you might be interested in today’s line up.
I was lucky enough to try out a couple of products from the good folks at Green People last month. Green People are one of the original proponents of organic beauty. Founder, Charlotte, worked with the Soil Association (serving on their committee) helping to design and set standards for organic health and beauty products. They know their stuff. So I opted for the Fruit Scrub Exfoliator* (to replace a recent empty) and the Gradual Tan Moisturiser* (because I’ve never really fake-tanned my face before).
I went in with a certain amount of trepidation. Facial scrubs don’t scare me but fake tanning does (particularly after some recent experiences). However, I’ve been really impressed by both. First up the Fruit Scrub, which combines a whole host of goodies for smooth, clear skin. I think the exfoliator must be the apricot seed powder which forms little ‘scrubby’ particles that give a decent level of exfoliation without feeling scratchy. There’s also olive and sunflower oil, plus shea butter for hydration and I spotted soothers like aloe vera and marshmallow extract in the mix too.
If you’re looking for a revitalising aroma you might be a bit disappointed. I’ve sniffed and sniffed and there’s the merest hint of something citrussy but it’s very subtle, despite essential oils of mandarin, bergamot and lemon peel. But to be honest, that didn’t really spoil the experience for me. This is a great budget scrub with a good line-up of ingredients and it left my skin feeling soft and not at all irritated.
Plus it’s a great prepper for the Gradual Tan Moisturiser.
Which is also pretty good. I’ll start with the smell because fake tanners always talk about that distinctive ‘biscuity’ smell and I really have very little frame of reference. I can tell you this doesn’t smell of biscuits. There was a citrus and something else that I just couldn’t put my finger on but was a bit earthy and different. After having a look online, it turns out it’s Ho Wood (along with mandarin and orange). Who’d have thunk it? Nice to see something unusual.
There’s also plenty of hydrators, the ever-lovely rosehip oil and a prebiotic called ALPHA-GLUCAN OLIGOSACCHARIDE, although I’m not entirely sure what prebiotics do when applied topically. Must research that.
This is a light, non-tinted lotion that was easy to apply and pretty much foolproof. I noticed that the colour started to come through by about application/day 2 or 3, depending on how pale I was when I started. Note that it’s pretty subtle (and therefore perfect for me) but it might not be enough for some of the hard-core tanners out there. You guys probably don’t need a recommendation from me though – you’re clued up enough already!
Although it’d be easily hydrating enough for those with normal, combination or oily skin, I did find it left my skin feeling a little tight after application if I used it on its own. Occasionally (more for personal preference than need), I layered it over a bit of facial oil but left a good 5 minutes for that to absorb first for fear it messed with the evenness of the colour.
Mostly though I just slapped it liberally over face and neck and never noticed a streak or any unusual pigmentation. Someone also commented that I looked ‘healthy’ on day 3. Result! I can see this being my go-to when I’m feeling a bit pasty and/or run-down.
Update (08.09): a bit of extra information courtesy of Green People on the use of prebiotics: “We use prebiotics in some of our skincare products (Day Solution, Gradual Tan Moisturiser and OY Range). Prebiotics support the good bacteria on the skin whilst restricting the growth of harmful bacteria so are an excellent ingredient for blemish prone skin.” So now we all know! Thanks Green People!
